Master’s Program
Applicants for the Master’s Program shall be evaluated and selected through
three qualifying stages: 1) written exam in the field of anthropology; 2) foreign
language proficiency test (English); 3) analysis of applicant’s research
proposals, curricula and academic records. Selected applicants shall be
summoned for an interview on the subject of their research proposal (oral
examination).
The Program's Coordinating Committee shall appoint a Committee on
Admissions formed by three faculty members. The latter shall be responsible for
preparing and grading the anthropology and proficiency exams; evaluating the
candidates’ curricula, academic records, research proposals and other required
documents; interviewing and ranking the candidates.
Upon approval by the Program’s Coordinating Committee, the Committee on
Admissions shall announce through public notice the list of documents required
for the application; the format, duration and content of the written exams; and
the specific evaluation procedures at the three stages. The above-mentioned
information shall be published on the GPSA website and the Sao Paulo State
Official Gazette.
The selected applicants shall be ranked on the basis of the grades obtained at
stages 1 (anthropology written exam) and 3 (evaluation of research proposal,
CV, academic record, and interview), according to the terms defined in the
Program’s Admissions public notice. Applicants obtaining grades higher than or
equal to seven (7.0) shall be admitted.
Doctoral Program
Applicants for the Doctoral Program shall be evaluated and selected through
three qualifying stages: 1) written exam in the field of anthropology; 2) foreign
language proficiency test (English and French); 3) analysis of the candidate’s
research proposal, curriculum and academic record. Selected applicants shall
be summoned for an interview on the subject of their research proposal (oral
examination).

of the weighted average of the grades obtained in qualifying stages 1
(anthropology exam) and 3 (evaluation of research proposal, CV, academic
record, and interview), according to the terms defined in the Program's
Admissions public notice. Applicants obtaining grades higher than or equal to
seven (7.0) shall be admitted.
Direct Doctorate Program*
*For GPSA-USP Master’s students only
Applicants for the Direct Doctorate Program shall be evaluated through three
qualifying stages: 1) written exam in the field of anthropology; 2) foreign
language proficiency test (English and French); 3) analysis of the candidate’s
research proposal, curriculum and academic record. Selected applicants shall
be summoned for an interview on the subject of their research proposal (oral
examination).
The Program's Coordinating Committee shall appoint a Committee on
Admissions formed by three faculty members among the supervisors in the
Graduate Program. The latter shall be responsible for preparing and grading the
anthropology and proficiency exams; evaluating the candidates’ curricula,
academic records, research proposals, and other required documents;
interviewing and ranking the candidates.
Upon approval by the Program’s Coordinating Committee, the Committee on
Admissions shall announce through public notice the list of documents required
for the Direct Doctorate application, the format, duration and content of the
written exams, as well as the specific evaluation procedures at the three stages.
The above-mentioned information shall be published on the GPSA website and
the Sao Paulo State Official Gazette.
Direct Doctorate applications require a letter of motivation justifying the request,
to be accompanied by copies of the candidate’s previous works (such as
published or unpublished papers, books, and dissertations) based on which the
Committee on Admissions shall assess the applicant’s academic qualifications.
Additional observations on the foreign language proficiency test
1. Proficiency in foreign languages may be vouched if Test of English as a
Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Test (IELTS) certificates for
English; and Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française (DELF) or Diplôme
Approfondi de Langue Française (DALF) certificates for French are presented.
The certificates must be valid for five years from their date of issue. The
requested minimum scores or grades for the acceptance of these certificates as
valid proof of proficiency in foreign language shall be determined by the
admission’s public notice published on the GPSA-USP website and the Sao
Paulo State Official Gazette.
2. Upon application, a request for the validation of the proof of English or
French proficiency obtained by applicants when admitted to the Master’s
Degree Program may be considered by the Program's Coordinating Committee.
3. Proficiency in Portuguese is required for the admission of applicants who are
non-native Portuguese speakers and shall be evaluated through a specific
exam as set forth in the Admissions public notice. Applicants approved at
intermediate and advanced level CELPE-BRAS exams shall not be required to
present further proof of Portuguese language proficiency.
4. Applicants who are non-native Portuguese speakers and have passed the
Portuguese proficiency exam when applying for the Master’s Degree program
are not required to take the exam again when applying for the Doctoral Degree
program.
5. Native English or French-speaking applicants are not required to pass the
proficiency exam in their mother tongues. They might submit an exemption
request to the PPGAS administrative office upon application.
