Enchantment is one of the best-known Afro-Indigenous manifestations in the North and in Maranhão, and therefore also in the Northeast of Brazil. Enchantment encompasses a range of elements that manifest themselves in Umbanda, as well as in some Candomblé terreiros (religious centers), and especially in Tambor de Mina and Terecô. The enchanted beings are spiritual entities that have not gone through the process of death, they have become "enchanted," and manifest themselves through mediumistic trance. They may have become enchanted in the forests, rivers, seas, animals, or various elements present in nature. Beyond the spaces of the terreiro, the enchanted beings are also present in different cultural manifestations, such as the Bumba Meu Boi festivals in Maranhão and the famous Parintins Festival, where in one of the narratives the King of Turkey and his three daughters are said to have become enchanted. To illustrate and present these and other narratives, some themes will be discussed, such as the Bumba Meu Boi Festival in Morro do Querosene in Butantã, the Umbanda manifestations in Parintins, and the Tambor de Mina in São Paulo.
The purpose of this Friday's panel is to present these and other narratives, focusing on the Bumba Meu Boi Festival in Morro do Querosene in Butantã, the Umbanda manifestations in Parintins, Amazonas, and the Tambor de Mina in São Paulo.
