In the Marmelos Indigenous Land, in the south of Amazonas, the Tiverin inhabit a territory historically occupied by their Kagwahiva elders and also by their isolated relatives. During the 1970s, this territory was crossed by the Trans-Amazonian Highway and the resulting growth of illegal resource exploration activities, which involved compulsory labor on the part of its inhabitants.
