DOSSIER Old Archives, New Questions
If in the past, museums, researchers, and collectors primarily created and circulated archives with the aim of presenting "the other," nowadays, more and more records of the past are leaving the technical reserves of institutions, driven not only by those who keep and research them, but also by those who are portrayed in the records or by their relatives. These individuals seek their archives to better understand their history, fight for their rights, or for affective and identity-related reasons. In this sense, new meanings are attributed to the place and knowledge about archives. The Dossier "Old Archives, New Questions" is open to articles, audiovisual essays, reviews, and interviews that address the subversion, critique, and challenges involved in the preservation and documentation of archives when they come to life in new contemporary circulation networks. Archives are understood to be a collection of distinct items, such as objects, photographs, films, documents, or sound recordings, resulting from research or collection, but which have undergone a process of documentation, archiving, conservation, and dissemination. In recent decades, new questions have emerged and subverted the idea that custodial institutions hold such heritage in a privileged way. In this sense, this dossier aims to discuss access, ethical implications, characteristics, and challenges of collaborative processes, archival return policies, and new relational dynamics.
