Ka'apor and Guató linguistic documentation
Presentation of the documentation project of Ka'apor and Guató. With Ka'apor we document the two languages of this people, the spoken and the signs. The collection of spoken ka'apor focused on documenting mythology, recording different versions of myths with different speakers, from different villages. The Guató collection was concerned with documenting an extremely threatened language, with only two speakers.
Ivan Rocha.
Ivan Rocha is a linguist working as a FAPESP Technical Training Scholar at the Documentation Center of Indigenous Languages and Cultures of MAE-USP. Previously, he did a postdoctoral internship at USP and served as a scholarship holder of the Institutional Training Program (PCI/MCTI/CNPq) at the Paraense Emílio Goeldi Museum (MPEG). In the same institution, he conducted a postdoctoral project funded by the Endangered Languages Documentation Program (ELDP/Germany), focused on the documentation and description of the Djeoromitxi language. He was a collaborating professor/Postdoc in the master's degree of the Graduate Program in Sociocultural Diversity (PPGDS/MPEG), where he taught the discipline of linguistic diversity and offered training in linguistic documentation. He has an undergraduate, master's degree and doctorate from the University of São Paulo (USP), with a sandwich doctorate period at the University of Texas in Austin (USA), through the BEPE/FAPESP program. His specialization covers documentation, description, creation of linguistic collections, revitalization of languages and development of pedagogical resources, including a multimedia dictionary, a pedagogical grammar and the translation and organization of texts in Djeoromitxi.
Linguistic Documentation: formation of a digital collection of language and culture of the Djeoromitxi people
The presentation will focus on the process of documentation and formation of a linguistic and cultural collection of the Djeoromitxi (Macro-Jê family, jabuti subfamily). The people inhabit the indigenous lands Guaporé and Rio Branco, in the state of Rondônia. Of a population of just over 200 people, about 35 speak the language, which is no longer transmitted to the new generations. Therefore, the research focused on a methodology designed not only in safeguarding, but in the use of the material for the production of resources to support language teaching and in supporting revitalization activities initiated by the people themselves. The records were carried out by the people themselves or with their active participation, including in the decision of what would be recorded or not. To develop the proposed methodology, the researcher trained members of the community in documentation techniques and provided an equipment kit (camera, recorders, microphones, tripod, computers and external HDs) so that they could continue with the records even when the researcher was not in the field. The results obtained were a collection of about 86 hours of video, 11 hours of transcribed and translated texts, a dictionary, a language teaching material and about 300 images (photos and illustrations).
