INVITATION | “A Sexta do Mês,” an event organized by students in the Graduate Program in Social Anthropology at USP, invites everyone to September’s themed panel! ✨

Theme: “Darcy Penteado’s Centennial: Art, Politics, and LGBT+ Memory”

The aim of September’s “Friday of the Month” is to celebrate the memory and the political and artistic legacy of Darcy Penteado (1926–1987), as part of a series of events held throughout the year to honor his centennial, and also to reflect on the conditions for the production and preservation of LGBT+ memory in Brazil, by placing the role of personal archives at the center of the debate.

The history of her personal and political journey, however, remains little known and under-explored, even within the histories of gender and sexuality dissidence in Brazil and among organizations dedicated to preserving LGBT+ history. Symbolic of this absence is the neglect of her personal archive, located in São Roque (SP), which survives the passage of time only thanks to the work and care of a small network of researchers. Personal archives, as an anthropological field, allow us to question the writing of LGBT+ history. Preserving these archives, in all their diversity, makes it possible to rewrite these historical milestones in light of personal trajectories. It means rethinking foundational milestones, such as the newspaper *Lampião da Esquina*, from the perspective of people like Darcy Penteado, whose contributions and personal, political, and artistic trajectories we have scarcely explored.
